Before you drive off in your car what safety checks should you make?

There are many reasons for making some basic checks before you set off in your car.

Checking the basics takes a few minutes and you should do them regularly so that you increase your safety!

Prevention is always better than accident.

Get into a routine of doing these checks so that you can be confident your car is safe to drive

Make sure you've got your glasses with you if you need them to drive.

Why not turn your mobile phone off before you set off? You'll not be tempted to answer it then.

Checks to make before you drive you car

It's so important that it is even included in the driving test these days. Pre journey checks need to be done to ensure your car is safe before you drive it.

What things do you need to check

Check your car manual for more information on any of these checks.

TYRES - check the pressure about once a fortnight.
Inspect the quality of the tyres for tread, wear and tears more frequently. If you kerb the car then have a look afterwards to see whether damage has been done.
Check you know what pressures they should be at. See the car's handbook or ask the manufacturer for help.
Remember that the spare needs to be in working order too.

Basic tool kit - do you keep a basic toolkit in the car? Everything you need to change a tyre? Clothes for cleaning windows.

Engine Oil - check the level. This is easy. Wipe the dipstick, dip and look. Is it within the recommended levels? If not, then top up.

Water - do you have the right levels of water? Do you have antifreeze in it? Do you have the right amount of coolants?

Wipers Windscreen & Screenwash - are these working without smearing? Is screenwash topped up? Is the windscreen intact?

Lights - check all the lights work. Having lights not working can get you stopped by the police.

Powersteering - does this work as it should? Do you know how to proerly check? Look in your cars instruction book for help.


Body of the car - look for knocks, rust, bends, any damage that might indicate you've been hit.

 

When you've set off then you should check your brakes. Don't go too far before testing and test only in a safe place. If you're concerned about brakes then please stop and contact the garage for help and advice. Driving on dodgy brakes is not recommended.


In bad weather take blankets, flask and some high energy foods (such as chocolate or energy bars) to ensure that should weather deteriate you are prepared.

Charge your mobile phone before you leave and check the weather forecast. If it says extreme weather warning then consider cancelling or postponing your journey.

Better to arrive late than not at all.
