Ideas to brighten up your lounge
Tidy up! By tidying up and removing clutter you’ll give your lounge
room more space. Decluttering is hard work – you need to be firm
about what goes and what stays. Anything in good condition that you’re
getting rid of can be sent to the local charity shop.
Remove items that you don’t like or don’t use anymore. If
they have no purpose then they are taking up valuable space.
Think about getting a mirror for above the fireplace – this will
bring light into the room and reflect it as well as giving the impression
of more space it’ll make the fireplace more of a feature.
Why not replace the rug? A new rug and cushions can make a room seem very
different and is often the easiest way of changing the styling of a room.
Look at ways you can change the window dressing too – do you want
blinds or new curtains?
Accessories such as nests of tables, coffee tables, lamps and pictures
give your living room the feeling that it’s a home and not just
a show piece. Put family photos on display, perhaps combining many photos
within one frame to make a compilation.
If you’re looking at changing your sofa then think what material
you’d like it to be made of – do you want hard wearing leather
or washable fabrics? Do you need removable covers?
Other items such as drawers and bigger tables can make nice additions
to your lounge. If you pick matching items then you’ll create a
feeling of togetherness to give a good overall look to a room.
Hanging pictures in your home instantly gives personality to the rooms. You can choose to either hang one picture per wall of hang them in a group. Three or five makes a good number to hang together although of course you can pick the eclectic option and hang many different frames and sized pictures together. This is often an interesting thing if you have lots of photos and pictures you want to hang up. By picking frames that match you create a set of images – even if the paintings are quite different. Unframed canvas prints or paintings can be very effective at giving a modern look. Modern abstract paintings can look fantastic grouped in threes.
Picking side tables can be difficult but pick up clues from the items of furniture that you’ve already got, or perhaps you have built in shelving or a fireplace to consider? Think about the colours or types of wood already in the room. If you’ve got lots of painted wooden shelving then you might like to consider matching this to side tables somehow, or if you’ve got lots of natural wood to pick tables made from the same materials will again create a consistent look.
What storage space do you have in your lounge? What items need to be stored? Do you have children’s toys and games which you like to keep handy? Consider your family’s needs and buy items according to what you need.
Have a smart paper basket and make sure its kept empty – certainly
don’t leave it until its overflowing til you empty it. Use a liner
(old plastic bags perhaps) and this will keep the inside of the bin clean.
Get in the habit of tidying up as you go - take cups into the kitchen
when you’ve finished with them and never leave glasses in last thing
at night. A little thought and tidying can ensure your lounge is always
presentable for unexpected guests.
Buying accessories for your bedroom
If you’ve already got the wallpaper of your dreams you need to ensure
that bedding and curtains, rugs and other soft furnishings match and co-ordinate
– or perhaps contrast if that’s the effect you’re looking
for.
Always make the bed, arrange a throw and cushions on it will give your
bedroom a stylish comfortable feel. Iron the duvet cover and pillow cases
too – although it is hard work it will look loads better if you’ve
done this.
Get and use a laundry basket so that you never have clothes on the floor.
Always hang clean clothes up, put shoes away and store items in the right
place. Sometimes having additional storage and drawer space can help you
be tidier so perhaps look at buying more bedroom furniture. If you have
a lot of clothes which need hanging up then consider buying an additional
wardrobe as clothes hung too closely get more creased.
Get a cosy bedside rug and put pictures on the walls.
