Thinking about what style room you want |
|
Room Style and DesignThere are lots of tv shows which show you how to change the look of rooms or your entire house. Programs such as House Doctor show you how to neutralise your home whilst programs like changing rooms show you how to do the opposite.Whether you want to restyle a single room or the entire house you have to look at lots of issues You should think firstly about budget. This is something that will constrict and restrain you most. You need to think about which rooms you want to sort out and how much influence existing furniture is going to have. For each room you want to remodel make a plan on paper of the room to scale. This will allow you to work out the size of the furniture pieces you need. I've heard of some people mocking up furniture in old cardboard boxes to get an idea of just how much space a piece will take up. Whilst for some this might seem a little extreme it can be useful. You'll also need to consider what style of room you're after - whether you want farmhouse look, town house style, country house class, mediterraen, internatiionally modern or eclectic or some other style perhaps based on various country's design themes. You need to consider colour, texture, fixture and fittings, existing style of furniture you're keeping. Once you've picked the furniture you need to consider the walls, floors, window dressings - see our web blinds page for more info on blinds - lighting, rugs, smaller items like lamps, tables, waste baskets, ornaments and everything else you'll want in your perfect new room. So what is Farmhouse style. The image for most people which is conjured
up is a kitchen with a big wooden table and either an aga or a open fire
in the room. Lots of open shelves filled with bottles and plates. Floors
will be slate, stone or brick, there might be wooden beams aceoss the
walls and ceilings, rough walls - even brickwork perhaps and lots of natural
looking materials which tie in the outside of the home with the inside. Town-house style is probably what we'd call appartment style these days. Top finished and quality throughout, with ensuites, stylish leather seats and a more minimalist look. Simple styling with elegant artwork displayed and different textures (faux fur is very popular at the moment) Country House - elegance and style with a more antiques look sums up country house style. You'd possibly need big rooms with polished floors to bring this off, and even maybe a butler. Stylish less modern furniture. Optimising a room's age using period features where possible and adding them if you need to. Plaster cornicing and picture rails where ceiling height allows. Mediterraenean style will be the strong terracotta colours on walls creating bold bright statements, plenty of tiles on the walls in the kitchen in strong bold colours, Fabrics like cotton can enhance the feel, as can white furniture. More use of outdoor space can be considered mediterean and encourgaing a merging of the two by more plants to bring the outisde in. Internationally modern will bring in the extreme modern cutting edge styles that can seem very brave at first glance. Glass tables, chrome, furniture with its own lighting for displays, lighting such as flourescent adds the modern feel. Eclectic can be the trickiest - putting different things together but bringing them cleverly together in a simple way. Mixing faux zebra throws with art deco lights might seem strange but can be done if you have sufficient style and planning. Personal displays of collections or things you'd love but might seem odd to others - such as excessive use of strong colors such as lilac and purple. Great opportuinity to bring in unusual rugs and lighting to add a fairytale look. Whatever style you're after you can be sure to get some excellent quality furniture and accessories at this store. Their range is brilliant and you're bound to find the ideal pieces of furniture for your home. |
