| In recent times the K,ekchi, Indians have been forced to use slash and burn techniques of farming on the slopes of the Guatemalan Cloud Forest to clear more land. This has led to soil erosion and thus a continual demand for unspoilt ground. Over a 1000 years ago the Maya used the wax of the fruit of the Arrayan Shrub to make candles. Today, using the same techniques K,ekchi, Maya women make candles in a workshop of a project dedicated to the protection of the Cloud Forest. The Arrayan shrub is native to the forest and grows naturally and easily. It also enriches the soil with nitrogen and prevents further erosion. The sale of the candles provides an alternative income for most staple food requirements, reducing the need to slash and burn more forest. The candles come with an explanatory leaflet about the project. These candles are bunched in sets of 10 and burn for approx 2 hours (L15cm). (Contains a small percentage of beeswax). | These lanterns are made with traditional iron and are hand-painted with cheerful Romany designs which will perk up any home, or make fantastic gifts. They are fairly traded and all made by a family firm in Srinagar, Kashmir. The firm itself has existed for three generations and we were amazed to learn that many of the workers today are the grandchildren of the original artisans. Made from iron and glass.
