About knitwear:

Aran Knitwear originated on the Aran Islands - at the mouth of Galway on the west coast of Ireland - where it is said you need an aran jumper to keep warm!
• Honeycomb: this suggestion of the bee seen in an Aran sweater is the sign of the sweet reward one gets for hard work.
• The Ladder: the stairway to heaven.
• Cable stitches: one of the most famous Aran knitwear stitches represents the fisherman’s hardy rope.
• The Zig Zag: Is thought to represent the pathways of Aran and the vicissitudes of married life.

Processing of Wool

It all starts with a sheep! They are shorn, then the fleeces are graded. They are sold electronically via the British Wool Marketing BOard (BWMB)
The fleeces are then taken to the processing plants where it is then sorted, scoured and carding takes place. The carding is the untangling. This is an important stage - wool for worsted yarn is then combed on a machine which runs the fibres through a series of teeth, removing all the short fibres (noils) and drawing out the longer ones to lie smooth and in parallel with one another.
The wool is combed into a continuous rope or 'sliver' called 'top' which is wound into a 'ball' or 'bump', ready for spinning. wool to be used for woollen yarn is not combed; the fibres are left higgledy piggledy, ready for spinning.

Combing, spinning, weaving are next. Wool can be dyed at various stages of the process.

Caring for lambswool - it is considered best to handwash lambswool, although there are now specific settings on modern washing machines for washing wool, you'll also need a good wool detergent. A slow spin is advisable as you can easily stretch wet wool. Some newer washers have special features to enable careful washing of wools.

The cardigan was invented by James Thomas Brudenall the 7th Earl of cardigan (1797-1868) - it is a knitted garment with a front opening and sleeves. It can be zipper or buttons at the front, or even open with no fastenings.

Nordic sweater are from Norway - they were originally only available in black or white - as these are the colours of the sheep!

When evenings are cool make sure you take a sweater out with you, wear it round your shoulders or keep it in the car (tucked in the boot out of sight so its not a temptation for thieves who might think you've got other things in the car too)

Chose colours which compliment other items in your wardrobe. This allows you to mix and match clothing better allowing you to wear your new jumper or cardigan more. Find scarves and hats to match your cardigans for winter and light chiffon scarves for summer to compliment your jumpers.
